Super
exciting giveaway to share this morning – don’t dump those old pennies just yet
:) I’m partnering up with Value Village and Savers stores to offer one of you
guys a chance to win $150 for the thrifting-spree of your dreams!
In honour
of the Canadian penny’s recent retirement, we would love to see how YOU are
repurposing the coins! It can
be anything – big or small – that includes the penny. The contest is open to both
Canadian and American entries, and the winner will receive a $150 gift card to
spend on whatever their thrifty heart desires at Value Village and Savers
stores!
Yes I am secretly wishing I could enter myself. Value Village has long been one of my fave haunts – proceeds help support local
communities and it’s
a gold mine for thrifty treasures. I popped in to my local store this week to give you a little taste of what you might find (and after lugging in my big camera I realized I forgot my memory card - sorry for the poor cell phone pics!)
These gorgeous glasses caught my eye from several aisles away - aren't the colours amazing? Kind of wishing I brought them home right now.
They had tons of great baskets and bowls - I especially liked these wooden ones for coraling random stuff on an entry table or nightstand.
I've been crushing on gold and brass for awhile now and I can totally see these dressing up a styled bookcase. The light fixture on the right was a little tacky no doubt, but picture it without bulbs and the base - wouldn't it make a great terrarium?
The armchair on the left had a beautiful shape, plus a peek under the skirt revealed gorgeous tapered legs - all it needs is a new upholstery job! The mid century mod chair on the right was also very cool, I'd love it redone in a punchy new fabric.
I actually spotted this piece awhile back at VV but I had to include it here because it's just that gorgeous - I still regret passing it up! It had spectacular lines and the most beautiful hardware on the doors. I'd have painted it out but it looked great as is too!
The clothing section is definitely the biggest part of the store - although I still had design on my mind when I took a browse - how great would these fabrics look repurposed as throw pillows?
Not sure where this big old wheel was from but it would make for some very cool rustic art!
A few other pieces that caught my eye: This sweet little desk perfect for a girl's room, another cute dresser that just needs some new knobs, and a great breakfast table under $20! The side table was also one of my faves - it had a marble inset top and the prettiest legs - could you imagine it painted out in white?!
Like I said - thrifting gold mine. Here's what you need to do to enter:
Can't wait to see your projects!

we actually donated them to the local SPCA. However I kept a few from the year I was born, my husband was born, the year my daughter was born and TRIED to get one from the year my son was born but he was born in 2002 and it turns out that was the queens 50th so the year was not printed on them! Anyways I was saving THOSE special coins to make key chains for my husband and I and one for each of the children for when they get their very first car
ReplyDeleteDonating them is such a wonderful idea! I'm wondering if any places are still taking donations - I have a bunch left that I doubt I'll ever use. So there really were no pennies printed with 2002?! That's so bizarre! I actually love the idea of keychains, that would look so cool! Maybe you can make one up for the contest!
DeleteWe have a penny alcove wall. Here is my blog link: http://worley-family.blogspot.com/2012/09/penny-wall.html
ReplyDeleteI can email the photos too if you need!!
Shannon
Thanks for your entry Shannon - your alcove looks amazing!
DeleteHi We just completed a wall of pennies 6' x16', taking about 19,500 pennies. We made the tiles first and then grouted them. It took about 100 hours of work, 40 hours to scrap the grout off most of the pennies. You can read our story and see the pics on our blog:

Hi Ellen, thank you so much for your entry! All I can say is WOW, your penny wall looks incredible! I can't even begin to think about how much work went into it!
DeleteWow, I love your blog! Mashallah you are one talented lady. Please keep this blog going. Your blog is great inspiration. I am a thrift store enthusiast. I have not started with furniture just yet but I am infactuated with vintage/classic toys for my kids. Which store do you shop in Toronto or which thrift store would you say has the best finds? :)
ReplyDeleteThank you SO much Mariam - you're so sweet! I'm so glad you like it :) And I'm always excited to meet other thrift store lovers! I recently moved to Pickering and a Salvation Army just opened up nearby but I haven't found anything great there yet, keeping my fingers crossed :) I've also been scoping out the Value Village and Goodwill in Ajax. I used to go to the Value Village near Eglinton and Vic Park and the GW in the Thorncliffe/Leaside area - which was a goldmine for furniture and books, although I don't know about toys! I've never gone thrifting downtown TO but I'm dying to someday soon :) I'd LOVE to know if you know of any good spots?
DeleteOh that's so funny because I ALWAYS go to the Ajax Value Village! :) I live near Rouge Park so I'm between Pickering and Toronto. I'm more into vintage toys/wooden toys etc. but have been getting into home decor lately after being inspired by many of these amazing blogs (including yours :)
DeleteI hate going into the city because of the traffic and hassle and have never been downtown for thrifting. I was pretty excited about it until I recently heard there is nothing in those stores since there are so many people shopping there and regular thrifters that rummage through those stores and leave nothing for the rest of us! lol. I also love the Lawrence & Markham Rd Value Village. I saw the almost same buffet/hutch you refinished there. It was almost identical. Priced at $169 I found it to be a bit overpriced for VV? Maybe that's just me. lol
I haven't had any luck at Goodwill in Scarborough yet and a bit turned off from the Salvation Army in Scarborough.
After reading your blog, I have a Rocker & Glider I'd like to tackle and refinish/upholester. If you have any recommendations for fabric stores, please let me know. I've also been getting into DIY curtains lately. Sooo excited! :)
Oh and..I'm excited to see what you are going to do with your new home. We just moved in to a townhouse and there are a lot of projects I'd like to get started on. I'm looking to update my backsplash, baseboards (raise them up on the cheap with a bit of moulding:P), add trim and moulding to doors (mine are identical to yours) and kitchen cabinets. Yay!
DeleteWow Mariam you're SO close! We should hit up the VV together one day! I'm the same about going into the city, I'll only go if I need to or I'm visiting someone. I guess that makes sense about the thrift stores though, although it's so disappointing! Maybe I'll still check some out someday just for fun :)
DeleteI know what you mean about the pricing - it's a hit and a miss sometimes. How long ago did you see that hutch? I would LOVE to do another one lol :) Although it's a bit pricey, but sometimes they will negotiate!
It sounds like you've got a lot of DIY planned for your new place, we're kindred spirits :) I'd LOVE to see pics! Either way send me your email address - I'm samaakhan[at]gmail[dot]com :)
I love the idea of this contest and what a fabulous giveaway prize!! Thanks for letting me know about this fun contest!
ReplyDeletehttp://prairieknitwit.blogspot.ca/2012/08/makeover-madness-part-3.html My ode to the penny is a beat-up end table I gave a makeover. My favourite part is the cluster of pennies I put near the center with my wedding anniversary and the years of the birthdays of the members of my family.
ReplyDeleteI love Value Village!
Thanks for your entry Jennifer - I've always loved the idea of tiling a table top with pennies and yours is just beautiful!
DeleteMy partner and I would gather up all the pennies we have and donate them to the ospca to help the animals that don't have homes. Make sure they have what they need so they can be taken care of.
ReplyDeleteThat's a beautiful idea - do you know if they are still taking them? I have a bunch left that I'm not sure what to do with but I'd love to donate them somewhere they'd be useful.
